High sleeper beds raise the sleeping area to a similar height as the upper bunk of a standard bunk bed, leaving the space beneath open for a desk, wardrobe, storage, or seating. Unlike a bunk bed, a high sleeper provides only one sleeping surface, making it well suited to single-child rooms where the priority is maximising usable floor space rather than sleeping capacity.
The key distinction between a high sleeper and a standard bed is the elevated sleeping platform. By raising the mattress to a height of roughly 150 to 170 cm from the floor, these beds free up a substantial amount of usable space in the room below. This space can be configured in several ways depending on the child’s age and needs, making the high sleeper a flexible option that can adapt as the child grows.
High sleeper beds are suitable for children aged six and above, in line with NHS and RoSPA guidance. The elevated sleeping position requires confident ladder use, and a low-profile mattress of approximately 14 to 16 cm depth is recommended to maintain effective guardrail height on the upper platform.
In smaller bedrooms, fitting a bed, a desk, and a wardrobe as separate pieces of furniture can leave very little floor space. A high sleeper consolidates the sleeping area into the upper level, freeing the floor beneath for functional furniture that would otherwise compete for space. This is particularly valuable in compact Irish homes where bedroom square footage is limited.
The area beneath a high sleeper bed can be fitted out in a number of ways. A desk and wardrobe combination provides a complete study and storage solution in one unit, which suits school-age children and teenagers. A sofa or bean bag in the lower space works well for younger children who want a play or reading area. Gaming setups with monitor space and shelving are also a popular option for older children and teens.
Most high sleeper designs incorporate staircase drawers, under-bed drawers, integrated shelving, or wardrobe units as standard. This reduces the need for additional bedroom furniture and helps keep the room organised, which is useful in rooms shared by siblings or in houses where storage space is limited throughout.
High sleeper beds are available in a range of finishes including white, grey, and wood-tone options that suit most children’s bedroom colour schemes. Railing cutout styles such as hearts, stars, and moons are available on some models, along with vinyl name decals and drawer colour choices. This level of personalisation means the bed can be matched closely to the room’s existing décor or the child’s preferences.

High sleeper beds are typically constructed from solid wood, engineered board, or metal. Solid wood and engineered board options, such as pine or moisture-resistant MDF, offer a durable and warm aesthetic and tend to provide more customisation options. Metal frames are lighter and often more affordable but offer fewer finish and design variations. All high sleeper beds should comply with BS EN 747 European safety standards, which cover guardrail height, ladder construction, and structural load capacity.
Full-length guardrails on all open sides of the sleeping platform are standard on well-built high sleeper designs. The guardrail must sit at least five inches above the mattress surface to prevent falls during sleep. Anti-slip ladder treads and a secure frame construction are important considerations when selecting a model, particularly for younger children who are using an elevated bed for the first time. Positioning the bed against a wall adds additional stability and is generally recommended.
